STNC Board Elections This Saturday!

The STNC board elections will take place this Saturday, August 4, 2012 from 2:30 to 8:30 p.m. A BBQ will begin at 1:30 p.m. Stop by to meet the candidates, neighbors and VOTE. This is your opportunity to let the city know the community of Sunland-Tujunga is active and involved in improving the quality of life in Sunland-Tujunga. Pollworkers are still needed on Saturday at the STNC polling site and also at the other seven neighborhood councils who will also be holding their elections on the same day. New Interim General Manager Grayce Liu

Kim is leaving to take a job in San Diego. Liu will be named interim general manager and given a chance to see how she does in the sensitive post. Kim had brought steadiness to the job of dealing with the 95 neighborhood councils in the city, riding out threats to dissolve the department into another agency and seeing its funding slashed dramatically.

LADWP Solar Program Garners Strong Response

LADWP PILOT FEED-IN TARIFF SOLAR PROGRAM GARNERS STRONG RESPONSE IN FIRST REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s (LADWP) new customer-focused initiative to expand solar power in Los Angeles took an important step forward with the recent close of applications from customers or other third parties seeking to develop and generate up to 10 megawatts (MW) of solar power that will be purchased by LADWP for distribution on the city’s power grid through a Feed-in Tariff Demonstration Program. LADWP staff has begun reviewing 26 applications submitted during a 1 1/2 month bidding period and will narrow the field to a short list of proposed projects in August. The short-listed projects will undergo interconnection studies in August through September, with final contracts offered and signed in October and November. The FiT Demonstration Program allows solar energy producers to sell solar power directly to LADWP to feed into its electric distribution grid. During the demonstration phase, the program is offering up to 10 megawatts (MW) of solar photovoltaic projects for third-party development. Projects will be selected based on the proposer’s price and the project feasibility. Upon completion, successful projects will receive their proposed price per kilowatt-hour, fixed for up to 20 years. “This is a significant step toward enhancing the amount of solar energy produced in Los Angeles,” General Manager Ronald O. Nichols stated. “We are very encouraged by the strong showing of well-priced proposed projects in the first round of bidding. “ During the demonstration phase, LADWP will fine-tune the process and gain pricing information to create the most cost effective FiT program for Los Angeles. “We are starting small to make sure we get it right,” General Manager Nichols said, adding that by the end of the year, LADWP will move forward with approval and implementation of the full FiT program, which will offer 150 MW worth of renewable energy. The results of the demonstration program and bid evaluation will provide information needed on pricing mechanisms and the rate at which the rest of the 150 MW will be deployed. Gran Fondo Bicycle Ride 7/22/12

Gran Fondo Bicycle Ride Sunday, July 22, 2012 7AM The ride begins in the City of Pasadena and enters Angeles Crest Highway in La Canada. It continues on to Angeles Forest Highway and then westbound on Big Tujunga Canyon Road. As the riders exit the canyon into the City of Los Angeles, they will ride southbound on Mount Gleason Avenue to westbound Hillrose Street. They then turn northbound on Oro Vista Avenue and enter back into Big Tujunga Canyon. It is estimated that the 800+ riders will be in Sunland at approximately 9AM. They should be pretty spread out and out of the area by Noon. As they enter our City, all riders have been advised to FOLLOW THE RULES OF THE ROAD including all stop signs. THIS IS NOT A RACE. THIS IS NOT A RACE. All residents who reside in the above areas should use extra caution during this time. Please remain patient as riders should only be in the Sunland area for 2-3 hours. District Ranger Invitation - Big Tujunga Reservoir Sediment Removal project, proposed by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works will hold a meeting at North Valley City Hall on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 - 6-8 p.m. This meeting is part of the public scoping required by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Short informational presentations will be given by both the Forest Servce and DPW, and will include the DPW proposal, an estimated project timetable, and an overview of the environmental review process. Sidewalk Repair Motion City & State Updates

Update: A draft ordinance is at the City Attorney where if given notice you would have 60 days to make repairs to sidewalks and driveways due to tree root damage. The draft ordinance will include language that if you fail to make the repairs the city will do so and charge an additional 40%, attach a lien to properties to collect. The Bureau of Street Services is scheduled to conduct a series of outreach meetings with neighborhood councils during July but so far no neighborhood councils have been contacted so we think this effort is now delayed. Assemblyman Felipe Fuentes Bill passed the State Assembly and is in State Senate Committee now with an amendment that the bill could not pass without a vote of the voters in California. LA City Council voted to oppose the bill. The average sidewalk repair is $3,500-$7,000. Councilman Alarcon is requesting addresses for sites needing repair from tree root damage. SCAM ALERT Beware of Impostors Posing as LADWP Workers Who Seek Bill Payment Over the Phone LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) cautions customers to beware of impostors posing as utility personnel making service-related telephone calls. These impostors seek to obtain money via a bogus unpaid LADWP balance by asking the customer to go to a nearby pharmacy and call a specific telephone number back with the customer’s financial information. LADWP customers have reported increasing incidents of this scam, and the Department is acutely aware of this scheme and on security alert regarding this and other fraudulent practices. The LADWP never calls customers seeking personal banking information. "Distraction telephone calls are an important issue for us but the good news is, this form of victimization is easily preventable," said Patrick Findley, Director of LADWP Security Services Division. "The more our customers know about it, the less likely it is to happen, so help us spread the word among your family, friends and neighbors." STNC Board Candidates Await Verification

We are awaiting verification of all candidates who filed for a position on the STNC board. This verification will be announced officially by the Independent Election Administrator. We expect the verified list to be confirmed by Tuesday, July 10 or sooner. As soon as it is available it will be posted to all STNC posting sites, the STNC website, our Facebook site and here. We've heard there are competing seats. If three or more seats are competing then there will be a full board election. If less, then there will only be an election for the competing seats. We anticipate a full board election.

LADWP Water Rebates for Homes & Businesses

July 1 Marks Re-Launch of LADWP Water Rebate Program for Homes and Businesses Rebate on California Friendly Landscape Increases to $1.50 Per Square Foot LADWP re-launches its popular water conservation rebate program for homes and businesses on July 1, offering rebates on more than a dozen separate water-saving incentives to encourage conservation while also saving money. Any of the 657,000 water customers within the City of Los Angeles service area can benefit from the rebates and incentives offered by the LADWP through the SoCal Water$mart Rebate and Save-A-Buck programs for items ranging from high-efficiency clothes washers (residential) to ice making machines (commercial) to rotating sprinkler nozzles (residential and commercial). LADWP’s Save–A-Buck program for commercial and industrial customers offers rebates for 15 different water efficient devices, machines and equipment. LADWP Water Conservation Begins July 1

LADWP ASKS CUSTOMERS TO STEP UP WATER CONSERVATION EFFORTS AS SUMMER BEGINS Water Conservation Rebate Program Incentives to Help Customers Save Water & Money Will Relaunch July 1 With summer officially here and temperatures on the rise in Los Angeles, LADWP is urging customers to kick their water conservation efforts into high gear to help reduce spiking seasonal demand. "This year's near record-low snow season in the Eastern Sierra underscores the unpredictable nature of snow and rainfall from year to year," said James B. McDaniel, Senior Assistant General Manager of the LADWP Water System. "Our customers have done a great job of integrating water conservation into their daily lives and now we just need to continue that trend. For those customers who haven't cut back, now is the time to adjust your sprinklers, check for leaks and really take steps to reduce your use. For those who have reduced their use, keep it up, and look for even more ways to save." To encourage conservation, LADWP is relaunching its Water Conservation Rebate Program to help residential and business customers conserve water. Beginning July 1st, 20 rebate incentives will be available to LADWP customers, including the very popular High Efficiency Clothes Washer Rebate ($300 rebate) and the Weather-Based Irrigation Controller Rebate, which offers up to $200 for properties under one acre in size. The California-Friendly Landscape Incentive, another customer favorite, will also relaunch On July 1 and will offer $1 per square foot to replace water-thirsty lawns with California-friendly landscape, artificial turf or water permeable hardscape. Since the LADWP first began offering this program in 2009, over 689 projects have been completed, resulting in the removal of nearly one million square feet of lawn turf. The best way for customers to lower their bills is to conserve wherever they can. Unlike many other water utilities, LADWP charges customers only for the amount of water used and does not charge a monthly water service or meter fee. Therefore, every gallon of water saved will mean a savings on the customer’s bill. LADWP reminds customers who use water for landscaping to continue on a three-day-a-week irrigation schedule, which is sufficient watering to keep plants and lawns healthy. Customers with street addresses ending in an odd number are allowed to water on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, while those with addresses ending in an even number are allowed to water on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
