Transportation was the single topic at today's L.A. City Council meeting. In fact, the meeting took most all day. If you didn't get a chance to hear it, you might want to watch the replay on Saturday -- Channel 35. Refer to L.A. City Council File #07-4123.
Gail Goldberg gave some great comments regarding schools and how much traffic we have in the City getting our kids to school. It use to be that kids walked to school but now kids are driven to school. This makes a huge difference on traffic and getting around in our neighborhoods.
Today was a kickoff for the Strategic Plan. More opportunities to be involved as this moves forward.

Rec & Parks Community Forum Feb 5
A series of Community Forums will be held throughout the City to gather input from LA residents about the future of the Recreation and Park system.
The next one will be here in Sunland on Tuesday, February 5th at Sunland Recreation Center, 8651 Foothill Blvd., Sunland 91040
The foundation of the Assessment is to engage community leaders, stakeholders, users and the general public to gain detailed insight into current and future needs for the recreation and parks system. The overall objective for the Needs Assessment includes:
• Address needs for additional recreation facilities and park land
• Identify improvements to facilities to meet current and future demands
• Prevent future maintenance issues
• Offer positive alternatives to an increasingly dense and urbanized population
The process is also guided by three unique groups to ensure the Needs Assessment is engaging as wide a spectrum of community leaders, stakeholder, users and constituents. These groups include:
• Advisory Group - Individuals that represent a wide range of political, social and technical perspectives. The Advisory Group serves in an objective capacity to provide input and feedback throughout the project and represents resources to support the implementation of the plan.
• Interdepartmental Group - Professional staff members from various City of Los Angeles Departments. This group serves to ensure that effective communication and coordination is occurring among and between the numerous planning and outreach initiatives within the city.
• Department Working Group - Senior staff members from within the Recreation and Parks Department. These staff members meet with the MLA/PROS Team on a regular basis to review the planning process, provide feedback and input into critical tasks and help coordinate the community outreach activities.

Bicycle Master Plan Update Coming Up
The City of Los Angeles is updating the Bicycle Master Plan, which will provide transportation improvements for the bicycling community. The public is invited to attend a workshop to provide input on bicycle policies, facility improvements and other related issues. Workshops are scheduled throughout Los Angeles, at four (4) neighborhood locations, during the months of February and March 2008. The City of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is proposing to replace the existing Redmont Pump Station, located at 10503 Redmont Avenue in the City of Los Angeles community of Sunland, with a new pump station, located at 10709 North Tujunga Canyon Boulevard, also in the community of Sunland. As the Lead Agency under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the LADWP has prepared an Initial Study/Mitigated Negative Declaration (IS/MND) which evaluates the potential environmental effects of the proposed project.
Under the proposed project, the LADWP would: (1) construct and operate a new water pump station to replace the existing Redmont Pump Station; (2) construct and operate two new underground water pipelines; and, (3) remove the existing Redmont Pump Station upon completion of the replacement pump station and its associated pipelines.
See pages 5 and 6 of the MND and 56-63 of the Initial Study for more detailed discussion of traffic and traffic mitigation planned for the project.

A Visit to Glendale City Council
I attended the Glendale City Council meeting on 1-22-08 with STNC's Education Rep, Lydia Grant and community stakeholders. Also in attendance and providing comments on behalf of Councilmember Greuel were Jim Dantona and Dale Thrush with CD2. Their meeting ran very long but we stayed the duration to be sure our comments were heard. The Glendale City Council was considering the details of their comment letter to the City of Los Angeles as well as whether to take an official role in the joint purchase of the property.
All five Glendale city council members expressed their firm and strong support to preserve the VHGC. However, they did not vote to pursue joint purchase at this time. Their position is to continue through the EIR process with a very watchful eye and visible involvement. They believe the environmental issues are extremely complex for this proposal. The Glendale City Mayor expressed the strength of the Sunland-Tujunga community and our well known efforts, making reference to our work on the Home Depot issue.
Reminder: January 31 is the deadline for public comments to be included in the VHGC Draft Environmental Impact Report, remind your neighbors to get their comments sent in and please include your own. Send to:

City to explore funding options for a VHGC purchase. Due to the logistics, it is not possible for STNC/DAC board members to be part of this meeting. Although Glendale did not vote to officially support VHGC preservation efforts, they will be attending for informational purposes.
I would like to direct you to additional resources and information regarding the VHGC. The savethegolfcourse.org website has detail information. Thanks to stakeholder Karen Zimmerman for her dedication to keep the details up to date.
