The SocalGas people were at last Wednesday's STNC meeting. They will be scheduling with everyone to come out to all properties and turn our existing gas meters into "Advanced Meters" - they have decided to do away with monthly bills and human meter readers (they said folks didn't lose their jobs but were reassigned or educated). This "Advanced Meter" is BATTERY OPERATED. Each day, this battery is triggered 4 times to read the meter. It's a nanosecond for all 4 reads resulting in a total of 2 minutes per year. This is why the battery lasts 20 years. The idea is that you can log into the system every 12 hours and find out how much you owe (rather than getting surprised after a month). You also can set the system up to send you an alert when you're getting close to spending $x - so you know whether to knuckle down and tighten your use, based on your budget. There are other things involved such as the addition of equipment onto light poles, additional light poles. IF you wish to opt out you may do so but after the State Legislature votes to approve a fee, will be charged for installation later.
