$3,500 more in property taxes ?

 Note:  This is info / hearing notice is in addition to what has been posted previously on this topic.  We want to make sure neighbors know and attend if they can.  Sorry this one is in South LA but not all dates are convenient for everyone.

Tonight the "on the road" public hearing on the proposed $3 billion street repair parcel tax will be held in South Los Angeles beginning at 6:00 p.m. (agenda below and attached).  I hope your Neighborhood Council will be represented.

We all agree that many of our streets need some serious repair work -- the question is whether asking homeowners of modest means to pay $3,500 more on their property taxes is affordable (homes of higher assessed value will pay more)?  Will the City keep its promise to maintain the streets after the ten year repair cycle?  Is there a more equitable way to pay for this?  Why isn't the City using more of the annual $7 billion dollars it already receives toward maintaining our streets?

This tax was slated for the May 21, 2013 City election until Neighborhood Councils, lead by LANCC, complained about the lack of notice.  A week later the City Council quietly instructed the City Attorney to draft the language for an future election, most likely the November 2014 ballot.  However, the City Council can still modify the ballot measure based upon your input.

This is a public hearing, so please do attend and speak up!
