Last Wednesday, July 29, 2009, STNC Region 1 reps, Linda Casteel, John Laue and I (representing Sunland north of Foothill to the wash and west of Mt. Gleason) met with Andrew Hennigan, Field Deputy for Council District 2 to go over a few projects in the area.
There were two main topics to discuss. The first was the condition of Oro Vista Avenue. Many Sunland residents may have noticed work was done by Jack-in-the-Box at Foothill & Oro Vista. This work was done to repair the storm drain, remove debris from the concrete culvert and other work related to this project. However, this project, from the point of view of the STNC District Reps was done on the wrong side of Oro Vista. What is needed, minimally, is the drain that overflows on the 7-11 side to be cleaned out so it flows in the correct direction and not back out onto Oro Vista. Andrew Hennigan, Field Deputy for CD2 told the group that there is a major plan to do major construction to repair the storm drains under Oro Vista down to Hillrose, possibly including sidewalks that would handle all of the pothole and storm water issues.
Another meeting is being planned with District One Reps and the Watershed, Engineering, Sanitation departments to view the plans and discuss the issues related to this project. Per Mr. Hennigan, the main thing holding this up is the funding.
The next issue was viewing the plans that were drawn up as a possible solution for Oro Vista Park. One thing that concerns some residents is the removal of the current house that is standing there. There has been very little discussion about this and some believe that the house should be turned into a Park Ranger Station, Youth Center, or some other option. Linda Casteel said, “I personally am excited about Oro Vista Park and to see the land utilized wisely.” Also, beginning plans are in the works for a fall Social Gathering at the Oro Vista Park site in September for residents of STNC Region 1. Stay tuned for updates on that!
