Sunland-Tujunga Neighborhood Council News By Mark Seigel, president Even though the Sunland-Tujunga Neighborhood Council doesn’t often “toot its horn” we do a great deal to help the community at many levels. Below are a few recent accomplishments. The Land Use committee of the STNC works hard to make sure new projects in our community fit in with the nature and character of Sunland-Tujunga. The STNC has worked hard over the past year and a half to assist in representing the stakeholders of our community to the City. We've been active in representing the community on the Samoa project and the Tuna Canyon Detention Station Historic Monument No. 1039. The STNC regularly attends meetings at the City Council and at City Commissions to make sure our community is represented. We've been active in trying to get our homeless off the streets and into housing. We've helped bring street repairs to our community. Did you see the Street Services trucks out for the “Neighborhood Council Blitz” this past week in the areas around Valmont and Plainview? We've partnered with the local organizations to help in improving storefronts and we work to attract new business to our community. The STNC has also been the major sponsor to the annual Fireworks at Verdugo Hills High School which continues a long-standing tradition. One wonderful thing I was able to do was to get the Oro Vista Park project restarted at the City. I had the good fortune to find the right person at Rec and Parks to get the ball rolling. Since then, the contract fund has been given back to Rec and Parks from General Services and now they can move forward with getting the park constructed. It is a passive park and they will be looking for docents to open and close and keep a watch on the park. If you are interested, please contact me. I am also working with Recreation and Parks and Council District 7 to reopen the Community Garden at Howard Finn Park. If anyone is interested in helping with the garden or utilizing the garden, please call me at 818-430-5244. This is one of many great ways for neighbors to be involved and work on committees in the areas you are passionate about. Other members of our board have been involved in “Bring Hollywood Home” and in expanding Arts, Culture and Recreation in our community with our Writers, Poets and Artists. After a long five year wait, I am proud to announce that the Foothill and Commerce Town Center will soon be occupied with new businesses! I met Mr. Kim, the soon to be new owner. He will be at the site daily to show the available stores to prospective tenants and share his plans for the future. We look forward to also seeing him at an upcoming STNC meeting soon.
