The February 7th STNC meeting saw over 120 neighbors in attendance. It was another great opportunity to meet more great people in Sunland-Tujunga and to hear about the wonderful things they do for our community. Great teachers at Mt. Gleason received recognition including: Mark Fackler, science; Robert Thurman, 8th grade science; Shannon McCord, science; Gary Ireland, astronomy; Michael Shone, Summer Academy & Egyptian Barter Day; Michael Janson, 6th grade math & science. Mr. Thurman gave a short presentation on the Habitat H20 program which will lead students to a hands-on science trip to Florida in June. Mission College president, Ernest Moreno stopped by to give updates on the turnaround at Mission College. Did you know that for $20 a unit you can take classes to earn your degree? Mission College would like to establish an educational center in Sunland-Tujunga, as a satellite location. Youth for Positive Change, Anthony Ortiz Luise spoke about their non-profit organization located at Verdugo Hills High School. It is an intervention program that finds alternative ways to help teens instead of suspending them from school. This program has reduced the rate of suspension and is helping kids in our community. Councilmember Wendy Greuel stopped by to give us some recent updates regarding the proposed Home Depot, Commerce Avenue lighting and street improvements and more. She stayed to answer many questions from our neighbors and STNC board regarding several quality of life issues. The STNC will have a report available on our web site www.stnc.org in a few days with Wendy's comments. We appreciate the time Wendy and her staff give to us -- especially staying late to answer our questions.
