NC 2012 ELECTIONS @ CITY COUNCIL TUESDAY

UPDATE: City Council voted 11-2 to approve the motion as agendized: "REQUEST the City Attorney to prepare and present an Ordinance to transfer authority for conducting Neighborhood Council elections from the City Clerk to DONE on a temporary basis for the 2012 Neighborhood Council election cycle." Councilmember Alarcon presented an amendment, seconded by Mr. Englander to delay the NC (2012) elections six months but this was defeated by a 3-10 vote.   This means that Neighborhood Councils can and should begin planning for NC elections.

NC 2012 ELECTIONS @ CITY COUNCIL TUESDAY

Whether or not Neighborhood Council elections will be held in 2012 will be considered by the Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 after 10:00 a.m. (see text of agenda item 22 below).

A public hearing is required to be held because only one member (Paul Krekorian) showed up for the Arts, Parks, and Neighborhoods Committee meeting on December 14, 2011. His recommendation is to NOT cancel 2012 NC elections and to (temporarily) allow DONE to conduct them (probably after July 1, 2012). This is in contrast to the pending ordinance drafted by the City Attorney which would cancel the 2012 elections and extend Board member terms to at least 2014.

Note:  Your STNC Board has voted that the STNC hold board elections in 2012.  The last STNC election was in 2010.  Also, Neighborhood Councils across the city also support that NC elections be held in 2012 should the NC choose to do so.
