Dear Community Leader:

Over the course of my career in City and County government, I have worked with many of you to exert careful oversight over development projects, as well as pass local ordinances and initiatives to protect the quality of life of our neighborhoods. I know that these issues continue to be of fundamental importance to you, and that is why I am writing at this time.

Several years ago, the State legislature passed a law, SB 1818, which expanded the requirement for local governments to provide density bonuses for housing projects that included a modicum of affordable housing units. Each local jurisdiction was required to enact a local ordinance implementing this law and the City of Los Angeles is in the process of developing and approving their SB 1818 implementation ordinance at this time. The ordinance is likely to come before the City Council in the next several weeks.

Below is a link to a letter that I recently sent to the Mayor and each member of the City Council outlining my concerns about the City’s draft ordinance. In the letter, I proposed modifications that keep faith with SB 1818 while also protecting the City’s neighborhoods. I am asking you to consider the information in my letter, evaluate the issues carefully as they relate to your neighborhood, and provide constructive input to your elected City representatives in the days ahead.
